MIME types and subtypes are used to tell email programs and Web browsers how to handle a given attachment or file. In the case of mime application/msword, the primary MIME type indicates that the file is related to an application while the subtype of “msword” indicates that the file is a Microsoft Word document. Several parameters are defined in the official registration of the mime application/msword content type including the optional version parameters. For example, if mime application/msword has a version parameter of 4, then the file is a Microsoft Word document 4.0 for Macintosh computers. The optional version parameter of 6 indicates that the file is a Microsoft Word document 6.0 for either Windows or Macintosh computers. The mime application/msword is relatively straightforward. When an email program receives a message with this MIME type, it knows that the document is a Microsoft Word document and understands that Microsoft Word will need to be launched in order to view the file. When a Web browser encounters mime application/msword file, it knows to launch the appropriate plug-in for either displaying the Word document within the browser or prompting the user to download and open the file locally in Microsoft Word. |
