The mime application/x-zip-compressed content type is a non-standard MIME type. This means that the Internet Assigned Names Authority has not registered the MIME type and its use is not standardized. Zip files are compressed archives containing other files.

For example, if you have several large video files, using a zip utility such as WinZip shrinks, or compresses, those files into an archive. This makes it much easier to transmit large files via email or other transmission means. The mime application/x-zip-compressed content type, though non-standard, tells the email client or web browser that the file encountered is a compressed zip file. Knowing this, the client or browser can respond appropriately by launching a compatible decompression utility.

The mime application/x-zip-compressed media type presents a challenge in that not only is there a zip file involved, but the zip’s contents could be virtually any type of file. Because of this, multipart/mixed is often recommended with each file within the zip file having its own specific content type. The mime application/x-zip-compressed mime type helps identify the file as a compressed archive, but it does not identify the file types contained within the archive. When you encounter mime application/x-zip-compressed you’ll need a compatible compression utility to open the file as well as the appropriate applications for the files themselves.
